The following section lists basic facts & figures about the state of the naming rights industry. For more information, you can also visit the FAQ page...

The figures provided for term and total value are based upon publicly reported figures. It is entirely possible that different sources reported different figures for both term and total value. For example, on the major league level, the deal for Citizens Bank Park has been noted as a $95 million arrangement or two separate agreements for $57.5 million and $37.5 million. The exact determination of what is "right" is up to the individual.

As such, the figures below are for illustration purposes only.

Major Leagues

  • There are 72 naming rights agreements currently in place for home facilities in the five major professional sports leagues.

  • 66.4% (87/131) of teams in the five major professional sports league play in named facilities.

  • The average agreement is approximately 19 years long.

  • The average deal is approximately $60 million making the average annual value approximately $3.1 million.

  • The NHL has the most teams playing in named facilities with 26/30 (87%). Only Detroit, the New York Islanders, New York Rangers and Phoenix Coyotes do not currently play in named facilities.

  • The NBA is second with 23/30 (76.6%)

  • MLB has 17/30 (56.6%) of its teams playing in facilities with naming rights.

  • The NFL has 56.2% (18/32) of its franchises playing in named facilities.

  • MLS has 30% (3/10) of its teams playing in named facilities.

  • There were 12 major league facilities named in 1999 making it the year with the most completed deals. Of those agreements, nine remain in place with the original naming sponsor.

Minor Leagues

  • There are 107 deals in place in minor league professional sports including the top levels of junior hockey.

  • There are 59 named facilities in professional baseball, three in minor league football, 37 in minor league hockey, five in minor league soccer and three in minor league tennis.

  • The average known term of these agreements is approximately 11 years.

  • The value of the average known deal is approximately $3.3 million making the average annual value approximately $280,000.

  • There were 22 minor league facilities named in 1999 making it the year with the most completed deals.
